Human and Pet Initiative (HAPI) is a community-driven, Oakland-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families keep their pets safe, healthy, and in their care. We provide free resources to pet owners in need, removing barriers to pet care so families don’t have to lose their beloved companions due to financial hardship or lack of support.
HAPI provides free, community-centered support that keeps pets safe and families whole. Each week, our team shows up in the places people already are—encampments, sidewalks, transitional housing programs, neighborhood hubs, and community events—offering essential pet services with compassion and zero judgment.
From ID tags and microchips to food, vaccines, and critical navigation help, we meet people exactly where support is needed most.
Everyone deserves the companionship, love, and sense of belonging that pets bring into our lives. But when resources are limited, caring for a pet can become an overwhelming source of stress. Some people fear they may be forced to give up the companion they love; others quietly go without so their animal doesn’t have to.
HAPI fills that gap. By offering free, accessible services directly in the community, we remove barriers to pet ownership and help prevent unnecessary shelter surrenders. Most importantly, we make it possible for people to stay connected to the animals they love — and who love them back.
